What's Buggin'? What are those little bugs falling from the sky?
Thrips are a tiny bug one to five millimeters in length. They are commonly called, "no see 'ems."
For a tiny bug they can do a lot of damage because of the number of them. If you have plants that were ready to bud up and do not bloom, these could be the culprits. They make "windows" on leaves and cause leaves to curl or deform. They are more of a nuisance than anything else. They come out early spring , you usually don't notice them until the wind stops. Yes, they do bite. You can get rid of them with Eight or Insecticidal Soap.

Petal Pushing It's freezing at night, are there any flowers I can plant outside that will have color?
There are a lot of flowers you can plant: pansies, violas, dianthus, snapdragons, and stock.
Two of the most popular flowers to plant right now are pansies and violas. Both of these plants can take the cold. They come in many colors, are fragrant and even edible. They usually die back in the mid summer because they do not like the heat. They like full sun to part shade.

Critter Corner This article is mostly for you in the Doney Park area. No, I'm not talking about wind. It's those darn prairie dogs, moles, and gophers. If you are new to the area you probably think that they are really cute. Don't be fooled. These guys can do major damage in your gardening areas.
They are so smart and fast what do you do? First off, especially if you have a large yard, you may want to accept the fact that you can only defend a part of your yard. You need to make a hard stand in your garden or landscaped areas.
We do not carry anything that will kill the critters but we do carry a product called Molmax. Molmax will chase them out of the areas you don't want them in. Come on in and ask anyone one of us about Molex.

Back To Basics We have come to the organic section of the newsletter. It is time to fertilize the lawn and we have a pure corn glutten fertilizer. Corn glutten is an organic source of nitrogen that is also a pre-emergent. It will last from 4 to 6 weeks. Corn glutten can be used on your lawn or in your garden.
It is important not to put in areas where you want seed to germinate. It will not kill weeds, it just prevents them from coming up.
Don't forget it is time to fertilize trees shrubs and perennials. We are have a really good line of organic fertilizers to get the job done. If you have any questions we will be happy to help you.

Water Wise Winter was good to us water wise, until the last month. So if you have not started yet, it is time to water.
You should also get out there and freshen up your mulch to help retain moisture. Just remember keep it off the trunks of your trees and shrubs.

What to do?
For those of you that have not read my blog "Life Is Better In The Garden" it is time to get out and take pictures of your gardens and flower beds. This will give you a record of your successes and your failures. It's a journal of sorts.
This is the time of year that you should be fertilizing your shrubs, trees, and grass.
You should also be pruning your winter damage, and anything else that needs pruning.
It is time to mulch your trees, shrubs, and perennials for the hot season that will be here anytime now.
If you have not done it yet is is time to put down corn glutten an organic way to prevent weeds in the flower bed. You should also cut back your perennials if you have not done that yet.
Now is one of the best times to plant. Plants transplant a lot easier when the temperatures are cool. So get out there and plant.
Get some spring color. Nothing will get you out of that winter funk like the color of our spring annuals.
